Dr. Matthew D'Auria is an Associate Professor of Modern European History at the University of East Anglia (UEA), where he also serves as Deputy Director of the Institute for the Study of Ideas of Europe (ISIE). He holds administrative roles including Senior Advisor for the School of History and has previously served as Post-Graduate Research Director and Chair of the Board of Examiners. His research focuses on the interplay between notions of Europe and national identity, particularly in French and Italian contexts, with notable projects on transnational nationalism and Benedetto Croce's intellectual legacy.
He earned his PhD from University College London (UCL) and has taught at Sciences Po Paris and the University of Salerno. His publications include The Shaping of French National Identity: Narrating the Nation’s Past, 1715–1830 (2020) and co-edited volumes such as The Cambridge History of Nationhood and Nationalism. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and recipient of the 2025 Transforming Education Award for Undergraduate Advising.
His research examines themes like nationalism, European intellectual history, and the historiography of conflict. He actively supervises PhD students in modern European intellectual history and political thought.
