Dr. Matthew Cooperberg is a Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He serves as Urology Co-Leader for the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center Prostate Program and is Chief of Urology at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. His research spans clinical and outcomes aspects of prostate cancer, with leadership roles in national registries such as the AUA Quality (AQUA) registry.

He led the development of the UCSF Cancer of the Prostate Risk Assessment (CAPRA) scores and pivotal validation studies for commercial tissue-based genomic tests. His current NIH-funded research includes noninvasive miRNA-based risk stratification and a new project on spatial multi-omics to interpret AI pathology algorithms.
His recent publications (2024–2025) reflect a strong trajectory in active surveillance, imaging (MRI, PSMA PET), AI in diagnostics, racial disparities, transgender health, and real-world genomic testing utility. These works appear in top journals including JAMA, JNCI, Eur Urol, and Radiology, indicating a multidisciplinary impact across urology, oncology, health policy, and medical ethics.
Scientific awards include the AUA Gold Cystoscope Award and multiple national research prizes. He has also received recognition from the American Cancer Society, AMA, and regional urology societies.
