Matthew Carroll is a Professor of the Practice in Journalism at Northeastern University's School of Journalism. He previously directed the Knight Foundation-funded Future of News initiative at MIT Media Lab, focusing on innovation in journalism tools and ethics. With 26 years at The Boston Globe, he was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Spotlight team investigating the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal, later adapted into the Oscar-winning film 'Spotlight'.

His research interests center on data-driven storytelling, media innovation, and addressing the local news desert crisis through projects like the Press Forward grant. He collaborates with Marty Baron and others on media ethics and power dynamics.
