Matthew Butcher is an Associate Professor at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL), where he also serves as Deputy Director. His work bridges architecture, art practice, and performance art, focusing on responses to climate change, rising sea levels, and coastal adaptation.

His design research explores performative spaces that respond dynamically to environmental conditions or human interaction. These works have been exhibited at institutions like the V&A Museum and Storefront for Art and Architecture.
Recent publications analyze themes such as avant-garde architecture, ecological symbiosis, and the role of drawing in theoretical exploration. He founded the P.E.A.R. journal and co-edited volumes on interdisciplinary design approaches.
