Matthew Allen is Senior Lecturer in Historical Criminology at UNE’s School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, holding a BA (Hons) and PhD from the University of Sydney. His research examines alcohol regulation, summary justice, and secularization in colonial New South Wales (1788-1856).
Current projects include a history of alcohol in colonial society and quantitative analysis of magistrates' roles in justice administration. Publications explore temperance politics, convict policing, and Samuel Marsden's controversial legacy.
Teaching includes HIST310 (Being Bad) and CRIM104 (Deviance). Service roles include History Council of NSW representation and editorship for the Journal of Australian Colonial History. Supervises postgraduate research on crime history in the British world.
