Matthew A. Shapiro is a Professor of Political Science at Illinois Institute of Technology’s Lewis College of Science and Letters and an Affiliate Professor at the Stuart School of Business. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Public Policy from the University of Southern California, an M.A. in Economics from the same institution, an M.A. in Korean Studies from Yonsei University, and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on innovation systems, Northeast Asian transboundary environmental issues, politicized science, and social media’s role in political communication. He has been funded by the NSF, NOAA, and the EPA, among others, and held fellowships at Argonne National Laboratory and the East Asia Institute.
Shapiro’s work bridges political science and technology policy, examining topics such as air pollution framing in Northeast Asia, filter bubbles in news recommendation algorithms, and equitable stormwater management in urban areas. His recent projects address energy policy, building electrification, and climate resilience. He has received the Fulbright U.S. Scholar award and the Woojung Scholarship. His teaching spans East Asian political economy, energy policy, and research methods in the social sciences.
