Matteo Nanni

Matteo Nanni is a Professor of Historical Musicology at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities. He serves as spokesperson for the 'Archiving Artefacts' research field within the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts' (UWA). His roles include leading the Institute for Historical Musicology and directing the project 'Archiving Colonialism. The Collections of Musical Manuscripts from Peru'.

Education: PhD (2003, Freiburg) in Philosophy and Musicology; Habilitation (2015, Gießen) in Musicology. Former positions include Professor at Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen (2015-2021), Assistant Professor at Universität Basel (2010-2015), and visiting roles at institutions like the Ensemble-Modern-Akademie and Summer School Zürcher Mediävistik.

Research focuses on contemporary music aesthetics, medieval music history, and the theory of musical notation. Notable projects include the DFG-funded 'Writing Music' project (2018–2021) and the MOOC 'From Ink to Sound: Decoding Musical Manuscripts' (2015–2017). His work bridges music with philosophy, visual culture, and colonial archives.

Key contributions include editing the Theorie der musikalischen Schrift series and co-leading international collaborations on musical manuscript preservation. Current projects emphasize colonial music collections and interdisciplinary approaches to written cultural heritage.
