Matteo Fiori is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen. He holds a PhD (2015) and LL.M. (2005) from the University of Groningen, and a law degree from the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' (2001). His expertise focuses on Human Rights Law, International Criminal Law, and Comparative Criminal Law. Fiori has extensive professional experience at the Council of Europe, including roles at the European Court of Human Rights (2011–present). He also practiced law in Rome (2006–2011) and worked at the ICTY (2005–2006).
His research explores topics such as humor regulation in legal contexts and procedural rights in criminal systems. He leads the NWO Vidi-funded project 'Forensic Humor Analysis: Rethinking Offensive Humor and Its Legal Regulation' (2022–2027). Fiori has authored publications on hate speech, free expression, and comparative criminal procedural systems, contributing to both academic and policy-oriented discourse.
