About
Matt Murray is a Research Fellow at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. He joined the Mailand Group in September 2022 and holds a Lundbeckfonden Postdoctoral Fellowship for a three-year project investigating human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and its interaction with ubiquitin-like post-translational modifications, with a particular emphasis on neural cells.
His research spans virology, molecular biology, and immunology, focusing on HCMV as a model to understand fundamental cellular processes. Murray studies how HCMV establishes lifelong latency in hematopoietic stem cells and reactivates upon differentiation, and how it manipulates the host immune system. His work addresses the significant health burden of HCMV in immunocompromised individuals and during fetal development, where it is a leading cause of hearing loss and neurological damage.
Scientific awards:
- Lundbeckfonden Postdoctoral Fellowship
Murray's laboratory work is conducted within the Mailand Group at the Center for Protein Research. He actively seeks collaborations for both basic molecular characterization of HCMV-related processes and clinical studies to understand HCMV in various medical contexts.
Education:
- PhD in Molecular Virology, University College London (2019)
- MSc in Natural Sciences (Systems Biology), University of Cambridge (2013)
- BA in Natural Sciences (Pathology), University of Cambridge (2012)
