About
Mats Deutschmann is a Professor of English at Örebro University, holding an adjunct professorship at the University of Seychelles. Born in Stockholm (1964), he earned his PhD in 2003 with a thesis on Apologising in British English, became a docent at Mid Sweden University in 2009, and assumed his current professorship in 2016. His research integrates sociolinguistics, education, and digital media to explore how language shapes identity, power relations, and cultural norms.
His work emphasizes the impact of pronunciation, dialect, and accent on social perceptions, particularly in educational contexts. Deutschmann develops digital experiential-pedagogical models to enable students to experience identity-based biases through manipulated virtual identities. He also investigates colonial language policies in African education, advocating for the integration of local languages like Seychellois Creole alongside colonial languages.
Current projects focus on language stereotypes and the decolonization of education systems. Collaborating with two doctoral students from Seychelles, he seeks to elevate the role of indigenous languages in African curricula. His interdisciplinary approach bridges linguistics, education, and digital innovation to address systemic inequities rooted in language and identity.
