Matilde Mateo

Matilde Mateo is a Research Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in History of Architecture at Syracuse University. Her work explores medievalism's political uses in Spanish art and architecture.

Research examines how Gothic and Mudéjar styles were manipulated to construct national identity, with focus on historiographical interpretations from the 18th century to Franco's regime. Current projects analyze Romantic-era publications and their role in cultural nationalism.

Fieldwork includes architectural documentation across Spain and Latin America, with publications on ritual uses of medieval symbols in modern politics.
