About
Mathieu Vandenbulcke is a full professor at the Department of Neuroscience within the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven. He serves as Head of the Neuropsychiatry Unit and Director of the KU Leuven Brain Institute (LBI). His research focuses on late-life depression, dementia, neuroimaging techniques (PET-MRI), synaptic density, and cross-cultural differences in neuropsychiatric disorders.
- Key projects include multimodal neuroimaging for white matter pathology in depression and non-invasive brain activity measurement using fNIRS.
- He investigates ECT-induced neuroplasticity, accelerated brain aging in depression, and wireless brain stimulation applications for neurodegenerative diseases.
His recent publications explore environmental triggers for dementia agitation, motor dysfunction in depression, synaptic density correlations, and neurodegenerative susceptibility patterns. He supervises interdisciplinary research teams and collaborates on cross-modal neuroimaging studies.
- Notable affiliations: Faculty Council of Medicine, Departmental Council of Neurosciences, and observer roles in key university governance bodies.
