About
Mathias Rollot is an Associate Professor (Maître de Conférences) at École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Grenoble, where he combines architectural practice with theoretical research. He holds a Doctorate in Architecture and an HDR in Theories and Practices of Architecture, and is a state-qualified architect. His academic affiliations include the CRESSON Research Team (UMR CNRS - UGA - ENSA Nantes - ENSA Grenoble - Centrale Nantes), the Laboratory of Contemporary Architecture History (LHAC) at ENSA-Nancy as an associate member, and the Popsu Transition Grenoble research group (2023-2026).
Rollot's research belongs to the field of ecological humanities, with past work focusing on doctrines of habitability, bioregionalism theory and history, alternative architectural practices, and architectural ethics and epistemology. His current research brings together decolonial ecologies and ethical, animalist, and environmental philosophies to develop critical theories of architecture for the Anthropocene era. He has published around fifteen research works on architecture and the contemporary world from an ecological perspective, including books such as 'Décoloniser l'architecture' (2024) and 'Critical Strategies for Ecological Architectures' (2025).
His recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a strong focus on decolonial approaches to architecture, bioregional mapping methods, and critical perspectives on conventional architectural practices. These works span multiple languages and publication formats, demonstrating his international scholarly engagement and interdisciplinary approach that bridges architecture, philosophy, anthropology, and environmental studies.
Rollot actively supervises five doctoral students across philosophy, anthropology, urban planning, and architecture, reflecting his interdisciplinary research approach. His supervision focuses on topics including more-than-human entanglements, gender issues in architectural education, bioregionalism and ecofeminism, and rural third places in France.
As an associate editor for the Architecture section of the Encyclopedia of the Anthropocene – Pluriversal Perspectives (Springer, 2024-2028), Rollot contributes to shaping scholarly discourse on architecture in the context of planetary crisis. His work represents a significant contribution to rethinking architectural theory and practice through ecological and decolonial lenses.
