Mathias Richter serves as Professor and head of the Department of Temperature and Synchrotron Radiation at the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB) since 2019, concurrently holding the Chairmanship of the Physical Society of Berlin from April 1, 2025.
His academic credentials include a physics degree (1984) and doctorate (1984-1988) from the University of Hamburg, postdoctoral research at DESY and Université Paris-Sud XI, and habilitation in experimental physics at the Technical University of Berlin (1990-1996).
Richter's research focuses on experimental physics with emphasis on synchrotron radiation applications, precision studies of the photoelectric effect, and temperature metrology. His notable contributions include investigations into the fundamental limits of photoelectric phenomena, reflecting his view of science as indispensable and his motivation through the joy of scientific discovery.
Since joining PTB in 1995, he has maintained continuous research leadership within Germany's national metrology infrastructure.
