About
Dr. Mathias Ingholt is a Research Fellow in the Department of Geography at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the Vital Geographies research group. He holds a PhD from Roskilde University (2019-2022), focusing on malaria epidemiology in 19th-century Denmark, and an MA in History from the University of Copenhagen (2014-2019). His research examines historical mortality patterns in low-lying regions of Denmark and England, with a focus on malaria’s impact on infant and adult mortality, as well as the demographic effects of floods and land reclamation. Collaborating with Dr. Romola Davenport and Max Satchell, he studies the Fenlands and Danish marshlands, supported by the Carlsberg Foundation and UK Research and Innovation.
Dr. Ingholt’s work bridges historical demography, medical history, and environmental science. He investigates long-term demographic trends in marshland communities, analyzing how disease, climate, and human activity shaped population dynamics. His recent projects include tracing the decline of malaria in Denmark, the epidemiology of influenza in Greenland, and the mortality crisis of 1826-1832 in Denmark. He employs interdisciplinary methods, integrating archival data, climatic analysis, and statistical modeling to uncover historical health patterns.
His research has been published in journals such as Medical History, BMC Infectious Diseases, and American Journal of Epidemiology. He actively collaborates with international scholars on topics ranging from pandemic impacts to historical disease ecology.
