About
Mathias Hallberg serves as Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences within Uppsala University's Faculty of Pharmacy, concurrently holding the position of Dean since 2020. His academic trajectory includes a Master of Science from Lund University and Teacher Training from Malmö University (1999), followed by Doctor of Pharmacy (2005) and Docent in Pharmacology (2007) from Uppsala University, with promotions to Senior Lecturer (2010) and Professor (2016).
His research program integrates three synergistic domains:
- Part A: Examines biochemical and physiological impacts of addictive substances (anabolic steroids, opioids, GHB) and hormones on drug dependence mechanisms, behavioral outcomes, and cognitive functions—specifically learning and memory processes in animal models
- Part B: Develops novel analgesics for neuropathic pain through drug discovery targeting tachykinin and renin-angiotensin systems
- Part C: Investigates proteolytic processing of neuropeptides into bioactive fragments influencing cognition-related brain structures (e.g., hippocampus) to identify cognitive enhancers
This work bridges neuropharmacology, addiction science, and cognitive neuroscience with translational applications for therapeutic development.
His scholarly contributions are recognized through:
- Oscar Prize (Uppsala University, 2009)
- Best Teacher Award (Uppsala University, 2013)
- Excellent Teacher designation (Uppsala University, 2016)
- UU Innovation Award (2022)
As Dean of Pharmacy, Hallberg provides strategic leadership across academic programs while maintaining active research direction. His laboratory within the Neuropharmacology and Biological Addiction Research group employs multidisciplinary approaches to dissect neurobiological mechanisms of addiction and cognition, with ongoing work focused on developing targeted interventions for pain management and cognitive disorders.
