Professor · Host Metabolic Adaptations to Inflammation
University of ToledoAbout
Matam Vijay-Kumar is a Professor at the University of Toledo, where he directs the University of Toledo-Microbiome Consortium (UT-MiCo). His research explores the complex interplay between host innate immunity, gut microbiota, and metabolic disorders, with a focus on Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) deficiency, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), and dietary influences on hypertension and liver disease. He earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore, India.
- Ph.D., Biochemistry, Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore, India (2002)
His work demonstrates how metabolic adaptations to gut inflammation can paradoxically protect against pathogens while promoting metabolic syndromes. Current projects investigate microbiota-dependent mechanisms in liver cancer, bile acid signaling, and the impact of dietary fibers on inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases.
His recent publications highlight trends in microbiome research, including glyphosate-induced hypertension, TGR5 signaling, and epigenetic effects of ketone bodies. Notably, he received the 2019 Harriet Dustan Award for his work on metabolites and hypertension.
