Massimo Motta is an ICREA Research Professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE). He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and Université Catholique de Louvain. His primary research areas are industrial organization and competition policy, with a focus on antitrust economics, digital markets, and regulatory frameworks. He founded the BSE's Competition and Market Regulation Program and served as Chief Competition Economist of the European Commission from 2013 to 2016.
His work includes influential books such as Competition Policy: Theory and Practice (2004) and Exclusionary Practices: The Economics of Monopolisation and Abuse of Dominance (2018). Recent research explores issues like merger control, digital market regulation, and resilience strategies in critical sectors. His articles often analyze exclusionary practices, geopolitical risks in markets, and the design of effective competition policies.
Motta advises global regulatory agencies and teaches competition policy at academic and executive levels. He has mentored students who now hold key roles in academia and regulatory bodies.
