Masashi Watanabe

Masashi Watanabe is a Lecturer in Coastal Marine Science at the School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton. Previously, he served as a Research Fellow at the Earth Observatory of Singapore at Nanyang Technological University (Feb 2022 - Sep 2024) and as an Assistant Professor at Chuo University, Japan (Apr 2019 - Jan 2022). His academic foundation includes a PhD in Civil Engineering from Tohoku University (2019), where he also completed his MEng and BEng degrees.

Watanabe's research focuses on coastal and ocean wave dynamics, sediment transport processes, and coastal hazards. He employs a multidisciplinary approach combining field surveys, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations to understand and mitigate coastal risks. His work particularly addresses tsunami dynamics, coral reef hydrodynamics, and sediment transport mechanisms. His research has significant implications for coastal management and hazard mitigation strategies in vulnerable regions.

His publication record demonstrates expertise across multiple domains of coastal science, with a particular emphasis on tsunami research, coral reef dynamics, and sediment transport modeling. The publications reveal a consistent focus on numerical modeling approaches to understand extreme coastal events, with recent work expanding into volcanic meteo-tsunamis in Southeast Asia and the South China Sea.

Watanabe is actively involved in several research groups including Nature-Based Ocean Solutions, Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, and Coastal Communities. He is currently accepting PhD students and continues to develop his research program at the University of Southampton, where he joined in September 2024.
