María Payeras Grau

Dr. María Payeras Grau is a Full Professor of Spanish Literature at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), where she has taught since 1982. She currently teaches courses including 'Contemporary Spanish Literature: from the Civil War to Today' and 'Gender Identity: Literature by Female Authors in Contemporary Spain' for both Spanish and Catalan Language and Literature degrees.

Her research primarily focuses on post-war Spanish literature, with special emphasis on poetry from the 1950s and contemporary Spanish women's writing. She has made significant contributions to understanding marginalized poets of the mid-20th century and the literary representation of gender identity in Spanish literature. Her work bridges historical literary analysis with contemporary gender studies, creating a unique interdisciplinary approach to Spanish literary history.

Payeras Grau's publications reveal consistent scholarly engagement with Spanish literary history, particularly examining how poets navigated the challenging post-Civil War period and how women writers have contributed to Spanish literature. Her work shows particular interest in canon formation, literary networks, and the recovery of marginalized voices.

As an active researcher, Payeras Grau has participated in six National R&D&I Plan projects (serving as principal investigator in four) and directed two teaching excellence projects. She previously served as Director of the Student Residence (1995-2000) and Director of the Department of Spanish, Modern and Classical Philology (2000-2004). She currently leads the GRINLIBE Research Group on Iberian and Ibero-American Literatures and previously directed the POESCO group from 2011 to 2022.
