María Julia García Fuster

María Julia García Fuster is Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Medicine at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). She serves as Director of the University Institute for Research in Health Sciences (IUNICS) and Deputy Scientific Director since June 2020, while also leading the Neuropharmacology group at both IUNICS and the Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IdISBa).

Her educational background includes:

• Graduate in Chemistry (1999) from University of Barcelona
• Graduate in Biochemistry (2001) from University of Barcelona
• PhD in Biochemistry with Pharmacology specialization (2005) from University of Barcelona
• Postdoctoral research at University of Michigan's Institute of Neurosciences (2005-2010)
• Postdoctoral research at University of California Irvine's Department of Pharmacology (2010-2011)

Dr. García Fuster's research spans neuropharmacology, neuroscience, and psychopharmacology, focusing on drug interactions with the nervous system. Her work has significant implications for understanding neurological and psychiatric disorders and developing related treatments. As Principal Investigator of the Neuropharmacology (NEUROFARMA) research group, she directs cutting-edge investigations in these fields.

She has been recognized with the prestigious Ramón y Cajal Research Fellowship (2011-2018), supporting her early independent research career at IUNICS.

Dr. García Fuster teaches Clinical Pharmacology and General Pharmacology in the Medicine program (2020-2025) and Neuropharmacology and Neurotransmission Systems in the Master's Neuroscience program (2020-2023). Her laboratory at IUNICS remains active in neuropharmacological research, contributing to both academic knowledge and potential therapeutic applications.
