Mary Morrell

Mary Morrell is Professor of Sleep and Respiratory Physiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, and Interim Head of the newly formed Cumbria School of Medicine. Her career spans academic research, clinical practice, and educational leadership, with a focus on sleep disordered breathing and its impact on patient care.

Research interests center on sleep and respiratory physiology, including:

• Mechanisms of sleep-disordered breathing
• Translational research into clinical applications
• High-altitude sleep studies

Mary has led curriculum reforms at Imperial College School of Medicine, developed educational programs (MSc Cardiovascular and Respiratory Healthcare, intercalated BSc in Remote Medicine), and established the UK respiratory sleep research network. Her work has influenced NICE guidelines for sleep apnoea treatment.

Mary has supervised 25 PhD/MD research fellows and currently mentors two registered students. She held a Wellcome Trust Prize International Travelling Research Fellowship and a Wellcome Trust Science Arts Grant for interdisciplinary research.
