Mary John is Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology and Head of the Department of Psychological Interventions at the University of Surrey's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. Her research examines the impact of adversity on young people's development of self-identity, well-being, resilience, and psychological distress.
John developed measures for personal recovery (ReQUEST) and self-conscious emotions (ASA and GSA). Her current work focuses on developmental trauma in young people, particularly looked-after children, examining how school transitions affect their well-being and identifying intervention targets.
She maintains professional affiliations with the British Psychological Society (where she co-chairs the Committee in Training Clinical Psychologists), Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice, and British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapy. John actively influences applied psychology training through engagement with Health Education England and the Psychological Professions Network.
