Dr. Mary Jane Smith is an Associate Professor in the History Department at St. Lawrence University. She specializes in U.S. southern race relations during the Progressive Era, African American History, and the history of the U.S. South since Reconstruction. Her research focuses on racial discourse and politics in southern white women’s voluntary associations, particularly the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. She is also initiating research on southern black women’s temperance work between 1865–1917.
