Mary C. Savin

Mary C. Savin is the Department Head and Professor of Microbial Ecology in the Department of Horticulture at the University of Arkansas, affiliated with the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences and the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station. She holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Rhode Island and has built a distinguished career in soil and microbial ecology.

Her research focuses on microbial ecology, soil biology, and biogeochemistry, particularly how ecosystems respond to management, disturbance, and recovery. Key areas include soil microbiome dynamics, antibiotic resistance in agricultural systems, nutrient cycling, and earthworm ecology in prairie and orchard systems. She investigates the impacts of poultry litter, conservation practices, and organic management on soil health and environmental sustainability.

Dr. Savin's recent publications (2024–2020) emphasize antibiotic resistance genes, soil microbial communities, conservation agriculture, and the ecological impacts of herbicides and manure. Her work bridges agronomy, environmental science, and microbiology, with strong emphasis on sustainable land management and ecosystem health.
