Mary C. English

Mary C. English is a Professor and Chair of Classics and General Humanities at Montclair State University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD from Boston University and specializes in Greek drama, its reinterpretation by contemporary American playwrights, and Latin pedagogy. Her academic contributions include co-authoring A New Latin Primer (Oxford UP, 2015) and editing The Spirit of Aristophanes (Edinburgh UP, 2024). She teaches Greek and Latin language courses, as well as classical civilization and literature.

Her research bridges classical antiquity with modern reinterpretations, emphasizing pedagogical innovation in language instruction. Recent work focuses on how contemporary playwrights engage with ancient Greek drama, reflecting evolving cultural narratives.
