About
Dr Martin Widmann is a Senior Lecturer in Climate Science at the University of Birmingham's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. He specializes in regional climate change, statistical downscaling methods, and past climate studies using proxy data. His research focuses on validating statistical downscaling techniques and integrating climate simulations with empirical proxy data.
He leads the MSc program in Applied Meteorology and Climatology and is involved in funded projects such as the Transient GCM Simulations of the Mid-Holocene Climate and the Southern Hemisphere Atmospheric Circulation (DEKLIM/Helmholtz Society). His work addresses critical questions in climate modeling, including compound climate extremes and hydrological impacts of climate change.
Dr Widmann's research has contributed to improving precipitation forecast accuracy over India, evaluating regional climate models for hydrological applications, and analyzing European drought and heatwave dynamics. He actively advises doctoral researchers in his areas of expertise and collaborates internationally on climate science initiatives.
