Professor Martin Weinelt serves as Principal Investigator and Spokesperson for the TRR227 Collaborative Research Center at the Department of Physics, Free University of Berlin. His research group investigates the geometrical and electronic structure of solids, thin films, and surfaces with particular focus on their response to femtosecond laser excitation.
His research spans ultrafast surface dynamics, examining single electron behavior at ferromagnetic metal and semiconductor surfaces, collective electronic responses to intense laser pulses, and coupling between electronic excitations and nuclear motion including vibrations, molecular switching, and phase transitions. Current projects include the BMBF Project DynaMaX, European XFEL SpinR investigations, and studies of Linear Dichroism of the Dirac Cone on $$ ext{Sb}_2 ext{Te}_2 ext{S}$$.
Professor Weinelt has mentored numerous graduate researchers through PhD theses and Master's projects on topics ranging from spin-resolved electron dynamics to magnetization dynamics in lanthanide metals. His research group maintains advanced experimental facilities for ultrafast spectroscopy and surface science, with current members including postdocs, PhD candidates, and technical staff working across multiple specialized projects.
