Martin Stolare is a Professor of History Research at Karlstad University, where he has been employed since the mid-1990s. He was appointed as a senior lecturer in 2003 and later an associate professor in 2011. His research focuses on history education in primary and upper primary schools, emphasizing the interplay between academic history and school curricula, as well as the use of local cultural heritage and historical sites in teaching. He is a key member of the ROSE research group, aiming to develop excellence in comparative subject didactics, and leads projects funded by institutions like the Swedish Research Council and the Swedish Institute for Educational Research.
Stolare holds a doctoral degree from the History Department at the University of Gothenburg (2003), with his thesis on modernization-critical social movements in Sweden (1900–1920). His work bridges formal and non-formal education, particularly through projects such as Läsa och Leva, which explored educational perspectives in Munkfors (1965–1978). He has also contributed to teacher training by developing courses within the teacher program, inspired by theorists like Jerome S. Bruner, to enhance disciplinary awareness in social studies education.
His research collaborations extend to cultural institutions, schools, municipalities, and central authorities. Notably, he co-authored articles for the Swedish National Agency for Education’s Läslyftet project (2015) and edited special issues on powerful professional knowledge in subject teaching (2023). Stolare is actively involved in shaping educational policies, emphasizing the importance of disciplinary foundations and interdisciplinary approaches in teacher development.
