Martin Schmitz

Dr. Martin Schmitz is a Lecturer and Research Group Leader at the Human-Computer Interaction Lab at Saarland University, under Prof. Jürgen Steimle. He also serves as an affiliated researcher at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Glasgow. Holding a PhD in Computer Science from TU Darmstadt, his research focuses on human-centered computing systems, emphasizing collaboration between humans and machines through interfaces like Extended Reality, Haptics, and Digital Fabrication.

His educational background includes dual Master’s degrees in Computer Science (with a minor in Psychology) and Visual Computing from TU Darmstadt, alongside a Bachelor’s in Computer Science. His work has earned prestigious awards, including CHI Best Paper Awards and the 2025 Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize.

Research interests span Co-Creative Systems, Human-Robot Interaction, and tangible interfaces. His publications address topics like 3D-printed electrodes, VR locomotion, and wearable robotics. He actively contributes to academic communities as a program committee member for UIST and CHI, and leads courses such as 'Human-Computer Interaction' at Saarland University.
