Martin Rohde is a Researcher and Scientific Director at the Chair of East European History at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He holds a doctorate in history from the University of Innsbruck (2020), focusing on the Shevchenko Society of Sciences in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His research spans transnational/transregional/transimperial history, history of science, photography history, and spatial constructions, with a geographical focus on Ukraine, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and the Habsburg Monarchy.
Rohde's academic career includes roles as a university assistant at the University of Innsbruck (2017–2020), and project staff member and scholarship holder under the Vice Rectorate for Research. He is affiliated with the Herder Institute Research Academy (Marburg) and the doctoral program Austrian Studies (Innsbruck). Key projects include studies on the Shevchenko Society’s role in Ukrainian science and visual histories of Habsburg Galicia.
His recent publications analyze spatial constructions of Ukrainian science, transregional intellectual networks in interwar Europe, and the interplay of national identity and imperial administration. He has also contributed to exhibitions on Galician photography and co-organized conferences on region branding in East Central Europe.
