Professor Martin Lawn is an Honorary Professor affiliated with the University of Edinburgh. He has held significant academic roles including Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, Visiting Professor at the University of Turku (Finland), Professor of Education at the University of Birmingham, and Professorial Research Fellow at Edinburgh's Centre for Educational Sociology from 2002 to 2014.
His research focuses on teacher professionalism, the labour process of teaching, European education policy, and the 20th-century history of educational sciences and comparative education. He has contributed to the field through books like Assessment Cultures – historical perspectives (2018) and Europeanizing Education (2012, with Sotiria Grek).
