About
Martin I. Reiman is a Professor in the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department at Columbia University. He earned his A.B. in physics and mathematics from Cornell University and Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford University. Prior to joining Columbia, he spent 38 years as a member and Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ, retiring from industry in 2015.
His research centers on applied probability with deep expertise in stochastic service systems analysis, optimization, and control. Key focus areas include queueing theory, inventory systems, and asymptotic methods—particularly fluid and diffusion limits—applied to communication networks, computing infrastructure, and manufacturing processes. His work bridges theoretical probability with real-world engineering challenges.
Dr. Reiman has held significant editorial leadership as associate editor and area editor for Mathematics of Operations Research and associate editor for the Annals of Applied Probability. He chaired the Applied Probability Society of INFORMS, shaping the field's research direction.
His distinguished honors include:
- INFORMS Fellow designation
- INFORMS John von Neumann Theory Prize
- Election to the National Academy of Engineering (2022)
