Martin Howell

Associate Professor Martin Howell is an academic at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Sydney School of Public Health and the Menzies Centre for Health Policy within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He holds the dual roles of Associate Professor and Principal Research Fellow. His research focuses on epidemiology, evidence-based medicine, health economics, and public health, with a specialized emphasis on kidney disease and nephrology. Dr. Howell leads studies on patient preferences, clinical practice guidelines, and healthcare access disparities, particularly for Indigenous populations and rural communities.

Current research includes the TeleKinesis Study (digital health intervention for kidney patients), the NAV-KIDS2 trial (patient navigation for pediatric kidney disease), and the eADVICE trial (web-based support for urinary incontinence). He collaborates on international initiatives like the Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology (SONG) program, which prioritizes patient voices in kidney disease research. His work spans clinical trials, health economics, and policy advocacy, addressing issues like organ procurement equity and healthcare resource allocation.

Dr. Howell advises two PhD candidates exploring patient preferences in AI-assisted diagnostics and Indigenous kidney health experiences. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles since 2010, contributing to journals like Transplantation, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation. His research integrates qualitative and quantitative methods to improve healthcare outcomes, emphasizing patient-centered approaches and health equity.
