About
Martin Gleave is a distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), serving as the Chief Scientific Officer of the M. H. Mohseni Institute of Urologic Sciences and former director of the Vancouver Prostate Centre (2006-2024). He is also the chairman of the Department of Urologic Sciences at UBC and holds a British Columbia Leadership Chair.
Dr. Gleave is internationally recognized as a leading researcher in prostate cancer, with a focus on molecular mechanisms mediating treatment resistance in cancer and designing co-targeting strategies to improve cancer control. His research has led to the development of novel therapeutic approaches targeting cytoprotective chaperones in cancer cells.
His research interests span multiple areas of prostate cancer biology:
- Molecular mechanisms of treatment resistance in prostate cancer
- Development of co-targeting strategies for improved cancer control
- Characterization of cytoprotective chaperones like clusterin and Hsp27
- Translational research from laboratory discoveries to clinical applications
- Novel therapeutic approaches for advanced prostate cancer
- Neuroendocrine transdifferentiation in prostate cancer
Dr. Gleave's extensive publication record demonstrates significant focus on prostate cancer research, with particular emphasis on treatment resistance mechanisms, molecular pathways, and novel therapeutic approaches. His work shows a consistent trajectory from basic molecular research to clinical applications, with numerous studies progressing to clinical trials.
Among his notable scientific achievements and honors:
- Appointed to the Order of Canada (2017)
- Inducted as a fellow in the National Academy of Inventors (2020)
- Recipient of the Dr. Chew Wei Memorial Prize in Cancer Research (2018)
- Awarded the Huggins Medal from the Society of Urologic Oncology (2018)
- Recipient of the Richard Williams Award from the American Urological Association (2017)
- Awarded the Barringer Medal from the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons
Dr. Gleave has demonstrated significant leadership in research funding and mentorship. He has published over 650 papers with more than 75,000 citations and attracted over $100 million in research funding. He co-founded the Vancouver Prostate Centre, which houses the largest program of its kind in Canada, and established PC-TRiADD as a national center of excellence. His entrepreneurial spirit led to the founding of OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals, Sitka Biopharma, TRiADD Therapeutics, and Sustained Therapeutics, with OncoGenex being awarded Canadian Biotech Company of the Year in 2010. As Chief Scientific Officer of the M. H. Mohseni Institute of Urologic Sciences, Dr. Gleave leads efforts to translate scientific discoveries into clinical practice to improve health outcomes for patients with various urologic conditions including cancer, calculi, transplantation, reconstruction, neuro-urology, infertility, sexual health and pediatric transition care.
