About
Martin Eklund is a Professor at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) at Karolinska Institutet. His primary affiliation is with MEB, where he focuses on reducing cancer mortality through personalized diagnostics and treatment. He holds a PhD in Biostatistics from Uppsala University and has held postdoc positions at AstraZeneca and Karolinska Institutet. His research spans prostate and breast cancer epidemiology, with a focus on clinical trials, biomarker development, and AI-driven pathology.
Education: BSc in Macroeconomics (Uppsala University), MSc in Mathematics and Molecular Biotechnology (Uppsala University), PhD in Biostatistics (Uppsala University).
Research interests include improving prostate cancer diagnostics via the Stockholm3 test and MRI integration, AI-assisted pathology for grading prostate biopsies, and large-scale trials like STHLM3 and WISDOM. He leads the ProBio trial for metastatic prostate cancer treatment and the KARISMA trial on tamoxifen for breast cancer prevention. His work emphasizes reducing overdiagnosis and treatment side effects through precision medicine.
Key grants include funding from the Swedish Research Council, Swedish Cancer Society, NIH, and others. His team includes 12 current PhD students and postdocs, with notable alumni now in academia and industry. He teaches courses on multivariable prediction modeling and clinical cancer epidemiology.
Major trials include STHLM3 (prostate cancer screening), WISDOM (breast cancer risk-based screening), and I-SPY COVID (adaptive platform trial for severe COVID-19). His AI initiatives focus on global validation of AI systems in pathology and MRI analysis.
