Dr Martin Dewey is a Professor in Applied Linguistics at King's College London, affiliated with the School of Education, Communication & Society and the Centre for Language, Discourse & Communication (LDC). He holds the role of Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of English as a Lingua Franca and coordinates the ELF research forum at King’s. His research focuses on English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), multilingualism, and language teacher education, emphasizing the implications of globalization and linguistic diversity for pedagogical practices.
Dr Dewey completed his PhD in 2007, focusing on English as a lingua franca. He teaches modules in applied linguistics and English language teaching at the MA level, including Principles and Practices and Research Methods: Qualitative Approaches. He has supervised over 10 doctoral students across diverse international contexts, including Bangladesh, Brazil, China, and others.
His research interests span ELF corpus analysis, language ideologies, and critical pedagogy. Key publications include co-authored works such as Analyzing English as a Lingua Franca: A Corpus-Driven Investigation (2012) and co-edited volumes like the Routledge Handbook of English as a Lingua Franca (2018). He actively contributes to international research networks like the King’s International Education Research Network.
Dr Dewey’s work bridges theory and practice, advocating for pedagogical approaches that reflect the realities of globalized language use. His recent studies explore ELF communication dynamics, teacher education frameworks, and the evolving role of English in diverse sociocultural contexts.
