Martha Gonzalez

Martha Gonzalez is an Associate Professor of Chicanx-Latinx Studies at Scripps College. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Washington (2013), where her dissertation focused on Chican@ artivistas and transborder tactics. Her research integrates postcolonial, Chicana, and performance theories to explore music and art as tools for social justice. She is the author of Chican@ Artivistas: Music, Community and Transborder Tactics in East Los Angeles (2020), which examines how artists in East Los Angeles used creativity to address systemic inequities since NAFTA.

• Recipient of the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop, Rock or Urban Album with her band Quetzal.
• Former Digital Humanities Fellow at the Claremont Colleges and University of Washington Graduate Medal winner.

Her work bridges academia and activism, emphasizing participatory practices like fandango and collective songwriting. She co-founded the Seattle Fandango Project and collaborates with Women Who Rock and the Women of Color Collective to promote community-building through art. Gonzalez’s interdisciplinary approach reflects her dual roles as scholar and musician, advocating for marginalized voices in both academia and the arts.
