About
Markus Piro is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Nuclear Fuels and Materials at Ontario Tech University's Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering, part of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. He holds a PhD from the Royal Military College of Canada (2011), an MScEng and BScEng from Queen's University (2007, 2005).
His research focuses on nuclear fuel performance, spent fuel management, and emerging nuclear technologies like GenIV reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs). Specializing in computational thermodynamics and multi-physics modeling, he also applies advanced mathematical techniques in optimization and fluid dynamics.
Prior to academia, he led the Fuel Modelling and Fission Product Transport Section at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (2013–2016) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (2011–2012). He has extensive consulting experience with government and industry partners.
- Awards: Canada Research Chair (Tier II)
- Labs/Teams: Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre (ERC)
Teaching includes courses on nuclear fuel cycles and related engineering disciplines. His work bridges theoretical modeling with practical applications in nuclear energy systems and manufacturing innovations.
