Markus Kleinert is Head of the Kierkegaard Research Center at the Max Weber Kolleg for Cultural and Social Studies, University of Erfurt. From winter semester 2022/23 to 2023/24, he served as Acting Professor for Scandinavian Studies at Georg-August-University Göttingen. His research bridges philosophy, religion, and literature with a focus on Søren Kierkegaard and Modern German Literature.
Research interests include conceptual history, Nietzschean philosophy, and interdisciplinary explorations of literary-philosophical intersections. He leads the Deutsche Søren Kierkegaard Edition project, translating and annotating Kierkegaard's journals and notebooks. Recent work includes the monograph Other Clarity: An Essay on Transfiguration in Art, Religion, and Philosophy.
Kleinert has organized international conferences including 'Metamorphoses of the Sacred' and 'Socratic Placelessness', fostering collaborations with institutions like the Søren Kierkegaard Research Center (Copenhagen) and Goethe University Frankfurt.
