Education: Studied human medicine at Heidelberg and Hamburg universities (1988–1996), earning a doctorate summa cum laude. Completed residency at TUM’s II. Medical Clinic (1997–2004), followed by habilitation in internal medicine (2009) after postdoctoral work at the Netherlands Institute for Developmental Biology (2004–2006). Headed the Laboratory for Molecular Gastroenterology at TUM (2006–2010) before becoming Associate Professor in 2010.
Research interests emphasize bacterial pathogenesis, vaccine development, and translational infection research. Key contributions include studies on Helicobacter pylori’s role in gastric cancer and the identification of novel vaccine candidates.
Awards include the DZIF Prize (2015), Munich Business Plan Competition 2nd Prize (2013), and Bavarian Habilitation Award (2003). His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, with a focus on gastrointestinal microbiota and inflammatory pathways.
