About
Markus Frey is a Researcher at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), where he has worked since 2008. He leads investigations into atmospheric and glaciological chemistry, focusing on air-snow exchange processes that influence climate through tropospheric ozone, nitrogen/sulfur cycles, and aerosol dynamics. His work spans both polar regions, with key involvements in the MOSAiC expedition and the ISOL-ICE project.
His research interests center on snow-atmosphere chemical interactions, including halogen chemistry, nitrate preservation in ice cores, and sea salt aerosol generation. He has developed critical parameterizations for snow-sourced aerosol emissions and photochemical radical production in polar environments.
Recent publications highlight his leadership in Arctic warming mechanisms through blowing snow aerosols and Antarctic ozone variability studies. Awards include the Polar Medal (2022) and Honorary Lecturer at the University of East Anglia, reflecting his scientific and educational contributions.
Collaborations include institutions like University of Arizona, University of Exeter, and Princeton University, with mentorship of 10+ students/postdocs. He actively contributes to IGAC and SOLAS initiatives and maintains a STEM Ambassador role, emphasizing polar science outreach.
