Markus Bernauer serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Literary Studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences, Technical University of Berlin, and directs the Jean Paul Edition project for the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2010/11.
His research centers on epistolary culture with primary focus on Jean Paul's correspondence and intellectual circle, extending to transnational literary connections between German, French, English, and Southern European traditions from the Enlightenment through Romanticism, Symbolism, and classical modernism. He actively investigates literature's relationship with visual arts, 1800-era German libertinism and its French parallels, and contemporary research on 17th-19th century European Italian literature.
As director of the Jean Paul Edition, he oversees comprehensive scholarly editing and digital humanities initiatives for critical editions of Jean Paul's works, leading collaborative research in both print and digital formats while maintaining office operations in room H2044 of the Main Building at Straße des 17. Juni 135, Berlin.
