Prof. Dr. Markus Beckmann is the Chair of Corporate Sustainability Management at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), within the School of Business, Economics and Social Sciences. He has held this position since November 2012 and serves as the spokesperson for the university's sustainability research focus, which combines various dimensions of sustainability with emphasis on economic, corporate, and societal transformation.
Beckmann studied languages, economics, and cultural studies (with a degree in cultural management) at the University of Passau, the University of Málaga, Spain, and the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. He received his doctorate in business ethics from the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 2009. Prior to his current position, he worked at the Wittenberg Center for Global Ethics (2003-2005) and served as a junior professor for social entrepreneurship at the Centre for Sustainability Management at Leuphana University Lüneburg (2009-2012).
His research centers on sustainability management and social entrepreneurship, with additional focus on business and corporate ethics and corporate social responsibility. Beckmann's work spans multiple dimensions of sustainability, including climate change mitigation, impact innovations, circular value networks, ESG financing, and ethics in digital responsibility.
