Mark Welker is the William L. Poteat Professor of Chemistry at Wake Forest University with expertise in organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and molecular electronics. Elected AAAS Fellow (2008) and recipient of multiple teaching/research awards, he has held leadership roles including Department Chair and Interim Provost.
Education includes:
- B.S. Chemistry (Highest Honors), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1981)
- Ph.D., Florida State University (1985)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, University of California-Berkeley (1985-1986)
Research encompasses: 1) Chemical modification of alginate polysaccharides for regenerative medicine and pH-responsive drug delivery; and 2) Development of organic thin-film transistors and molecular rectifiers using self-assembled monolayers. Recent publications focus on bioink engineering, molecular electronics, and novel synthetic methodologies.
Honors include WFU Faculty Leadership Award (2020), Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (1994-1999), and Excellence in Research Award (1991).
