About
Mark W. Meisel is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Florida, affiliated with the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. His research focuses on experimental condensed matter physics, particularly low-dimensional quantum systems, spin crossover materials, superconductivity, and biophysical studies of magnetic field effects on gene expression in plants. He has led NSF-funded projects (DMR-0701400, DMR-0305371) and collaborated extensively with institutions in Slovakia, including Pavol Jozef Šafárik University.
- Education: PhD in Physics, Northwestern University (1983)
- Current Teaching: PHY 3101 Intro Modern Physics (Fall 2025), PHY 2260 Enriched Physics 1 (Spring 2026)
Research interests include: studying quantum mechanical phenomena in low-dimensional organic/inorganic conductors, nanostructured antiferromagnets, superconducting materials, and biophysical systems using magnetic levitation. His group investigates how pressure, light, and magnetic fields influence material properties.
Recent publications highlight trends in spin crossover dynamics, core-shell nanoparticle strain, high-field material synthesis, and Cantor alloy magnetic behavior. Collaborations with chemists and engineers (Daniel R. Talham, D. R. Talham Group) emphasize interdisciplinary approaches.
Scientific awards include a Fulbright US Scholar (2012-2013) and an honorary doctorate from Pavol Jozef Šafárik University (2010). He has supervised numerous PhD and undergraduate researchers, many of whom now hold positions at institutions like Intel, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Caltech.
Grants and outreach efforts include NSF funding, involvement in the University Scholars Program, and educational activities with local elementary schools focusing on gravity, free fall, and scientific methods.
