Dr. Mark W Bowyer serves as the Ben Eiseman Professor of Surgery and Surgical Director of Simulation at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD, where he is Chief of Trauma and Combat Surgery. With 22 years of active military service concluded, he trains military physicians in trauma care through his roles in Advanced Trauma Life Support and Definitive Surgical Trauma courses. His clinical practice continues at Washington Hospital Center, one of America's busiest trauma centers, leveraging combat experience from his Iraq deployment as "Trauma Czar" overseeing 3,500+ casualties.
His educational foundation includes a BS in Chemistry and General Science from Coe College (1981), MD from University of Colorado Health Science Center (1985), General Surgery internship/residency at David Grant USAF Medical Center, and Critical Care Medicine fellowship at UCSF. This military medical training pipeline underpins his academic expertise.
Dr. Bowyer pioneers simulation-based surgical education, replacing animal models with advanced simulators for trauma training. His research spans virtual/augmented reality applications, patient safety initiatives, and military surgical readiness systems. As architect of the ASSET course deployed across 11 countries, he drives innovation in surgical skills assessment and curriculum development for combat casualty care.
His publication portfolio reveals consistent focus on trauma surgical skills validation, simulation efficacy, and military medical readiness. Recent work emphasizes quantitative metrics for resident performance, virtual reality training retention, and international war surgery curriculum standardization - establishing foundational frameworks for modern trauma education.
Major recognitions include:
- Robert Danis Prize (2017) for trauma/critical care contributions
- ATLS Meritorious Service Award (2011)
- Baron Dominique Jean Larrey Award (2009)
- Satava Award (2008) for surgical technology innovation
