Mark Sapir is a Centennial Professor at Vanderbilt University's Department of Mathematics. Previously, he held positions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Associate Professor) and Ural State University (Assistant Professor from 1979, Associate Professor from 1989). Born in Russia in 1957, he earned his PhD from Ural State University in 1983.
His research focuses on algorithmic algebra, geometric/asymptotic group theory, van Kampen diagrams, Burnside problems, and group identities. He has over 100 journal publications and 1,800 Google Scholar citations. Sapir is a managing editor of the International Journal of Algebra and Computation and an editorial board member of Algebra and Discrete Mathematics.
Notably, he delivered AAC’s 15th mini course on topics including diagram groups and group growth functions. He has held visiting roles at IHES, MPI-Bonn, MSRI, and Paris 7.
