University of British ColumbiaAbout
Mark Rheault is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology within the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Okanagan. He maintains his office in ASC 370 and serves as a graduate student supervisor.
Dr. Rheault earned his BSc (Honours) and PhD from McMaster University, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Florida. His academic journey has positioned him as an expert in insect physiology and biochemistry.
His research focuses on the physiology of epithelial ion transport, insect toxicology, insect-plant interactions, metals toxicology, and organic ion transport. Through his Rheault Lab for Insect Physiology and Biochemistry, he investigates fundamental mechanisms of insect physiology with applications in pest management and vector control. His work bridges molecular biology, biochemistry, and entomology to understand how insects process xenobiotics and interact with their plant hosts.
Dr. Rheault's publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to the fields of insect toxicology and physiology, with particular emphasis on nicotine metabolism in the cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni), mosquito physiology, and plant-insect interactions. His recent work includes innovative approaches to mosquito control through surface design and evaluation of natural compounds as insect repellents.
- Mechanisms of nicotine metabolism in caterpillars
- Water transport mechanisms in mosquito larvae
- Plant signaling during insect herbivory
- Natural product insecticides and repellents
- Ion transport physiology in insect epithelia
Dr. Rheault teaches courses in cellular physiology, vertebrate zoology, invertebrate zoology, insect physiology, and biochemistry, bringing his research expertise into the classroom to provide students with cutting-edge knowledge in insect physiology and biochemistry.
