About
Mark Rains is a Professor & Chief Science Officer for the State of Florida at the School of Geosciences, University of South Florida (USF). He holds a B.A. from UC San Diego (1990), M.S. from UC Davis (1994), and Ph.D. in hydrogeology from UC Davis (2002). His research focuses on ecohydrology, hydrological connectivity, and geological controls on ecosystems, with emphasis on wetlands, streams, and groundwater interactions.
- Roles: Professor at USF, Chief Science Officer for Florida
- Key Projects: Led over 4 major projects including Kenai Lowlands salmon research, Florida Coastal Everglades modeling, and vernal pool habitat restoration.
Research interests span hydrological processes in diverse environments, including Alaska salmon streams, Florida wetlands, and mangrove ecosystems. He has been awarded the 2015 Future of the Region Award, 2009 EPA Level II Achievement Award, and a Telly Award for educational media.
Teaches courses in hydrogeology, ecohydrology, and geoscience field methods. His work integrates geospatial tools, remote sensing, and biogeochemical modeling to address water resource challenges and ecosystem resilience.
